About Kupilka:
Kupilka makes traditional Scandinavian camping dishware that is light and made of a highly unique material.
Kupilka is located in Kontiolahti, Eastern Finland. The unique biomaterial was developed by Puugia, the Centre for Wood Technology in Joensuu, and is manufactured by Plasthill Oy, the same company that now manufactures the Kupilka products. The core product of the Kupilka series, Kupilka 21 standard cup, was launched in 2001 by Kari Kuisma. All Kupilka products were designed either by Kari Kuisma, or well-known Finnish architect and designer Heikki Koivurova. Kupilka is the Nature Traveller Best Friend or “Luonnossa Liikkujan Paras Kaveri” in Finnish.
Kupilka means a “little cup” and the word stems from the Finnish word for cup which is “kuppi”. It also refers to a term used by Finnish people decades ago, when men and women warmed up their hands with their “kupilka” or “little cup” by drinking hot beverages during the rough Finnish winters.
Kupilka products are made of a biomaterial. The material used is Kareline™ Natural Fibre Composite that consists of 50% pine fiber (wood) and 50% BPA-free plastic. If you compare it to plastic, the benefits of Natural Fibre Composites are better heat endurance and higher durability thanks to the stiff structure. Another advantage when comparing the material to plastic is that it enables the use of engraving techniques. If you compare it to wood, the benefits of Natural Fibre Composites are that they do not require maintenance, nor do they “absorb” smells. The material is also insensitive to humidity. All Kupilka products have been approved for food contact and are dishwasher safe.
